Using WIRES-X

Post by VK2PR » Sat Jul 22, 2017 4:12 pm

Disconnecting From the Node or Room

When your WIRES-X session is complete, it is necessary to disconnect from the node or room which you are connected to. Pressing and holding the X button on your transceiver releases your radio from the WIRES-X connection, but leaves the repeater connected to the node or room. To properly disconnect the repeater from the node or room before releasing your radio, follow the instructions below for your radio.
  • FT2DR: Press and hold the BAND key for over 1 second. If disconnection is successful, NOT CONNECTED will be displayed and the screen returns to the local node connection screen.
  • FTM-100DR: Press and hold * on the microphone for over 1 second. If disconnection is successful, the screen returns to the local node connection screen.
  • FTM-400DR: Press and hold * on the microphone. If disconnection is successful, NOT CONNECTED will be displayed.
  • FT-991(A): Touch DISCNCT. If disconnection is successful, NOT CONNECTED will be displayed and the screen returns to the local node connection screen.
This disconnection procedure can only be successfully performed during a break in transmission. It will not be successful while the repeater is transmitting.

Leaving an Adequate Break Between Overs

To allow users to send commands to the node, an adequate break is needed between overs. When using WIRES-X, it is suggested you leave a 7-10 second break between overs to allow other users to disconnect if they wish to. Throttling the repeater in WIRES-X mode not only makes it difficult for other stations to break into the QSO, but makes it impossible for disconnection commands to be sent and received.

Some changes have been made to the VK2RFG WIRES-X node (VK2RFG-RPT).

VK2RFG is now permanently connected to our room (VK2RFG-ROOM) by default. This allows other stations to connect to VK2RFG via WIRES-X through other repeaters and communicate with local stations who are using VK2RFG directly in digital mode.

When you connect to VK2RFG via WIRES-X you will notice it is connected to VK2RFG-ROOM. If you wish to connect to another node or room, simply perform your search and connect (or connect using your saved favourites) as usual. The default connection to VK2RFG-ROOM will be dropped and your new connection will be enabled.

NOTE

New connections will only remain active for a maximum of 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the following will occur.
  • If the repeater is idle, it will disconnect immediately, then return to VK2RFG-ROOM 30 seconds later.
  • If the repeater is busy, it will maintain the connection until 20 seconds after voice communication has ended, then it will disconnect, then return to VK2RFG-ROOM 30 seconds later.

If you are still actively using the connection after 30 minutes and it is disconnected, you will need to reconnect.

It is still good practice to disconnect your session manually once complete, using the method described in the previous post.
